Meeniyan is centrally located in South Gippsland, Victoria, about 90 minutes South-East of Melbourne. It is within easy reach of Wilson's Promontory, the great deserted beaches of South Gippsland including Sandy Point, Warath Bay, and Venus Bay, and the Rainforests of Tarra Bulga National Park. It is a town on the rise, as it can now boast amazing food, wine, local produce, shopping, dining and art galleries.
Meeniyan's Foodie revolution began with Moo's at Meeniyan and has now grown to become the new "it" town for great food and wine experiences. The popular Trulli Pizza serves authentic Southern Italian wood-fired pizza and antipasta. Pandisol Bakery has quickly established a reputation as the best bakery in the region, offering hand-made sour dough breads, home-made pies, great coffee, and beautiful prepared rolls, cakes and slices. The Meeniyan Store sells a unique range of locally-sourced produce, foodstuffs and beer, wine and spirits, as well as amazing coffee. Jam and Pickles is a classy little cafe where everything is made on-site.. And now The Meeniyan Square has opened, incorporating Tamsin's Table, local boutique food and wine producers, and the jewell in the crown Meeniyan Pantry and Wine Store - a world-class deli and wine store.
Last February, the inaugural Meeniyan Garlic Festival, show-casing the finest of the region's produce and lifestyle products and services, was a run-away success, attracting 7,000 visitors. This year, it promises to be bigger and better. February 17th is the day not to be missed. Visit http://www.meeniyangarlicfestival.com.au/
Arts and Culture
South Gippsland boasts a huge number of talented artists and artisans, and boats a number of excellent galleries. One of the best is located in Meeniyan, the newly refurbished and expanded Meeniyan Art Gallery. There are three separate rooms as well as a surprising and diverse gift shop. The newly opened Meeniyan Square is a true Craft Market - all the products are locally made, and hand-made. Meeniyan is also home to some excellent gift shops, including The Duck Hut, which is the premier florist and flower arranger in the region. Lacy's Jewellers is now a Meeniyan institution, attracting people from many kilometres away for custom-made pieces and superb off-the-self pieces. Nearby to Meeniyan is the arty little town of Fish Creek, boasting four fantastic galleries including Gecko Studio Gallery, The Celia Rosser Gallery and the truly unique Ride The Wild Goat.
The live music events held at the Meeniyan Town Hall organized by the Lyrebird Arts Council have become legendary. Attracting international artists who often only play a couple of other venues on their entire tours, the gigs are intimate and very special. The Meeniyan Hotel also has regular live music evenings and afternoons and serves meals seven days a week.
We are very lucky to live and work in such a dynamic, creative environment. The Outer Space is a major addition to this.
Wilson's Promontory and The Prom Coast attracts a huge number of visitors every year, yet the beaches never seem crowded. In fact, they often seem more deserted than anything else. South Gippsland has sometimes been called "drought proof". The rolling hills of the area seem to stay green long after other areas have gone brown in summer. This climate is ideal for the area's biggest industry, Dairy Farming, but also suits a number of other farming practices. The area is attracting people who prefer a quieter life. With great food and art!
There are definately four seasons in South Gipplsand. Every season offers something wonderful. including winter, when the you will find the beaches and walking trails even quieter than usual.
